Denture Reline Procedures: A Guide

Dentist Blog

If you wear dentures, you know that they require some special care and maintenance. One important thing you should consider is getting a denture reline. But what is a denture reline? Here's everything you need to know.

Denture relines explained

A denture reline is a procedure in which the fit of your existing dentures is improved by adding more material to the inside surface that rests against your gums. This new material can be either soft or hard. Relines are necessary because as your gums shrink and change over time, your dentures will no longer fit as snugly or comfortably as they once did. In fact, ill-fitting dentures can cause a number of problems, such as pain, ulcers, and gum irritation. Dentists typically recommend getting a reline every few years or so, depending on the state of your gums.

The two types of denture reline

There are two main types of relines: chairside relines and laboratory-processed relines. A chairside reline is typically completed in one appointment right in the dental office, while laboratory-processed relines are sent to an off-site lab.

Chairside reline procedure

First, your dentist will clean your dentures and remove any existing calcium deposits. Next, the dentist will work to roughen up the outer surfaces of your dentures so that the new material can adhere properly. Then, they will apply the new material to your dentures and shape them so that it fits snugly against your gums. Finally, they will make any necessary adjustments and polish your dentures so that they look new again!

Laboratory processed reline procedure

If you opt for a laboratory-processed reline, you will need to have two appointments with your dentist. During the first appointment, they will take an impression of your mouth so that the new material can be custom-made to fit. Once the new material has been made, you will return for a second appointment so that it can be applied to your dentures before they are refitted.

Summary

Denture relines are an important part of keeping your dentures fitting well and comfortably against your gums. There are two main types of relines: chairside relines and laboratory-processed relines, and each involves a slightly different process. Book an appointment with your dentist today to talk about which type of reline is right for you. They will be happy to answer any questions you have about the relining process and the benefits of getting your dentures relined.
